Robin Hobb Cover Quote
Posted on 04.13.06Categories:NoneI got the following email from Robin Hobb the other day: (It was CC'd to me from an email sent to my editor's assistant.)
"Way back in November, you sent me the manuscript for Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn. I've read it under the worst possible circumstances for a book, that is, in tiny bits and pieces of time as I could find them. And it still held together and held together well.
Mistborn utilizes a well thought out system of magic. It also has a great cast of believable characters, a plausible world, an intriguing political system, and despite being the first book of The Final Empire, a very satisfying ending. In short, it's one of those great kettle books, in which the author has thrown not merely a bone of an idea and a few potatoes of originality, but half a cow and everything in the garden. And then added seasonings. Highly recommended to anyone hungry for a good read.
With best wishes,
Robin Hobb"
As you can imagine, I'm tickled pink. Robin Hobb is one of my favorite fantasy authors, and she's the only one I sent MISTBORN to for a cover quote. (My editor picked a few others, I think.) I was very hopeful that she'd like the book.
It's still amazing to me that such important authors will take the time to read, and give a vote of confidence, to newcomers like myself. Someone like Robin Hobb—who, in my opinion, writes far better than I do myself—must be flooded with manuscripts from newbies wanting to put their name on the cover. I suppose the only thing I can do to repay things like this is to read other newcomer's books, once (hopefully) I'm established as an author.
That all said, I really do think that fans of Ms. Hobb's work will enjoy MISTBORN. I think that the 'feel' of our worlds are similar, and I think we book take a similar approach to depth of characterization. So, once you've read SHAMAN'S CROSSING, make sure you pick up MISTBORN!
