Election

I have to say, I am a bit surprised that this whole election thing is over. I honestly expected it to go on and on for days, like it did the last time. I want to say this for Kerry—conceding and not drawing us through all of that confusion has to be one of the most classy things I’ve seen a politician do. Ironically, if I’d know about this event before the election, I might have been swayed to vote for him.

I’m a pretty staunch republican, but I nearly did vote for Kerry. I liked what he had to say in the debates (when he and Bush weren’t taking shots at each other.) While I like Bush’s honesty and sense of dedication, I think his administration has done a horrible job of. . .well. . .being politicians. They haven’t handled opinion of America, or even public opinion in America, very well. Sometimes, you just have to be nice to people.

However, one of my main reactions against the Democratic party this time around—particularly their choice for president—was this feeling of hatred toward Bush. I don’t react well to hatred. I don’t care how passionate you are, if you can’t acknowledge good things about your opposition (at least, in a political race and culture like ours, where I believe most people are rational) then you are not going to be able to sway me. Bush is not a terrible person. Neither is Kerry. You insult half the population of America when you try to convince me otherwise.

The Democrats didn’t run a candidate. They ran a ‘We hate Bush’ campaign. Now, I’m not saying the Republicans didn’t do their share of mudslinging. However, I just got a sense from the Democrats that they didn’t even really care who their candidate was—as long as it wasn’t Bush.

Give me someone you feel passionately about, people. Uplift instead of tear down. Don’t insult my friends who like Bush; instead, tell me why the policies of your favored candidate will help my country. Then maybe you’ll have a convert.
